PHYSICIANS AND PHARMACISTS REACT TO
ONTARIO’S BILL 102
__________________________________________________________________
Vancouver, BC – A syndicated study examining healthcare professionals reaction to Ontario’s impending Bill 102 and the use of generic drugs was released today. The study, prepared by MD Analytics, surveyed family physicians and pharmacists in Ontario and offers key reactions to Bill 102’s proposed legislative changes, as well as key insights into the differences between family physicians and pharmacists attitudes regarding branded and generic drugs.
The Ontario government’s Bill 102, the Transparent Drug System for Patients Act, was introduced in April of 2006. Bill 102 is designed to reshape Ontario’s publicly-funded drug system to get better value for money, enhance the quality of care patients receive and encourage greater collaboration across the drug system.
Several of Bill 102’s proposed changes reflect the valuable contribution to patient care made by pharmacists, including changes to their compensation model and opportunities for greater involvement by pharmacists in the care of their patients.
“This report is crucial to the understanding of the impact of Bill 102 across the healthcare industry in Ontario,” said Howard Glase, Managing Partner, MD Analytics. “Any further discussions on this issue should begin with a reading of this report and its findings.”
Some key report findings include:
- An anticipated increase of 60 per cent in the proportion of generic drug writing versus branded drugs amongst a key segment of general and family practitioners.
- Widespread support amongst both GP/FP's and pharmacists for the latter to take on a more prominent role in the provision of professional services.
